Speck CandyShell Case for iPhone 4S Review

This is not our first Speck CandyShell review, and as long as Apple keeps inventing new products, it probably won't be our last! Since our last CandyShell for iPhone 4 review, the case has seen a few subtle and necessary upgrades. It's still among the most fab and chic-looking iPhone 4 and iPhone 4S cases out there with color schemes that simply can't be matched. In addition to the upgraded CandyShell [classic] we also got to review the CandyShell Flip which features a flipback bottom panel for easy docking.

The Speck CandyShell cases are among the most protective iPhone cases out there. They offer supreme protection with their soft rubber interior and hard plastic exterior. There's a raised rubberized bezel running around the screen which will take the brunt of any fall. The CandyShells are a bit bigger and heavier than the average case, but it's worth it. They slide in and out of pockets easily with their smooth outer shell. There are rubberized button overlays for the volume buttons and lock/unlock button, which are a pleasure to use.

There are individual cutouts for the toggle switch, headphone jack, mic, speaker, and dock connector as well as a nice large cutout for the camera/flash. The syncing/charging dock connector cutout is large enough to fit different sized syncing cables and may even accommodate
some docks. The only difference between the Speck CandyShell and CandyShell Flip is that the bottom inch of the Flip pivots behind the phone so the iPhone can fit in any type of dock. This includes Apple docks and all sorts of speaker docks.

Other than the flip out bottom, both CandyShells are identical and just as usable and protective. The CandyShell Flip, however, is also much easier to remove the iPhone from. This revised version of the original CandyShell and CandyShell Flip has received a much larger camera cutout which helps the camera take in as much light as possible and it also happens to look nicer. The toggle switch cutout is now longer and accommodates iPhone 4 and 4S of any carrier. All of the button overlays are a little larger and easier to push. And lastly, the rubberized bezel around the screen feels a little harder and durable, which will help the cases from wearing and discoloring.

Conclusion

If you want a stylish case that you can count on to completely protect your iPhone 4 or 4S, then look no further. The Speck CandyShell is
available in 15 crazy awesome colors,
including the web-exclusive SnakeBite Green color that we reviewed. For now the CandyShell Flip is
only available in three color schemes including the Black/Peacock version that we reviewed. Both cases are the same price from Speck at $34.95 each. Like anything else, they can be found on Amazon for less: as little as $20 depending on color. If the price is thesame, we'd recommend the CandyShell Flip as it makes life easier with docking and removing the case.

The Good: Very protective/durable, looks great, available in fun color schemes, good button overlays, and  flip model will fit in any dock.

The Bad: Heavy, headphone cutout could be larger, and hard to remove iPhone (Non-Flip Model) from case.
